Call to Action

The stories pouring out of the Horn of Africa are heartbreaking.
In July, the UN declared regions in Somalia to be suffering from famine.
But Somalia is not the only country affected, as hundreds of thousands of refugees are pouring into neighboring countries, seeking food and shelter.
Kenya has been one of the primary destinations for refugees, as there has been a dedicated camp, Dadaab, in existence since the early 1990′s.
The camp was originally built to hold 90,000 people, but recently an influx of people have made the population swell to over 400,000, with the number expected to reach half a million by the end of 2011. Dadaab is overcrowded and understaffed, resulting in a situation almost as desperate as the one Somalis fled.
Our CEO, Rick McNary, just returned from a visit to Dadaab in which he witnessed the horrors of this famine first-hand, and worked to established connections so that Numana can take part in the near-term food aid needed to mitigate this crisis. In a blog post in Rick’s Journal he observed, “I’ve seen starving people before but this is criminal.”
Numana is appreciative of the emails and phone calls asking how you and I, ordinary Americans, can help the starving in the Horn of Africa. We have now established several partners in Africa that we can use to safely deliver Numana meals to people who desperately need it. As of right now, political and military tension in Somalia preclude the ability of foreign aid getting into the country. However, the Somali refugees in Kenya still need our support.
