Numana, Inc. announces the creation and dedication of the Numana Gardens – A Garden and Food System to address the hunger and nutritional challenges of El Dorado and Butler County and test a model that could be replicated in other communities.
Numana will hold a community ground breaking and dedication ceremony for the Gardens Wednesday, October 19, from 4:30 to 5:30 at the Gardens on the 800 block of North Gordy in El Dorado. Refreshments will be served at the official ground breaking and sign ups to lease a 25’ x 25’ community plot will be available as well as other information about the Gardens.
Recent reports indicate that one in six residents of El Dorado go to bed hungry each night and 56% of the USD 490 students qualify for the free and reduced lunch programs. Numana Gardens will engage the community to collaborate in an educational and enjoyable garden experience to grow healthy foods to help lessen the impact of hunger in El Dorado. Ultimately, the mission is to create access to locally grown food by developing a sustainable food system.
The Numana Gardens, situated on 2.4 acres donated by the City of El Dorado, will create a place for volunteers to donate time, tools and equipment and financial resources to actively improve the health of the community. Additionally, there will be community plots available to rent for personal use.
Food insecure individuals feel the impact of nutritional deprivation in all facets of their lives. Lack of proper nutrition contributes to obesity, life long health problems, diminished learning potential and is a negative force on both the individual and the community well being.
“Our desire behind the Numana Gardens is to create a fun, festive, family-oriented atmosphere where people can build community and take care of each other and the land,” said Numana board member, Dick Morris.
Numana Garden project leader, George Myers added, “Science proves time and again that poor diet, lack of physical activity and obesity cause health issues such as heart disease and diabetes. The Gardens will be an educational and practical approach to help children and adults adopt healthier lifestyles.”
