Rick’s Journal
Rick McNary of El Dorado, Kansas founded Numana with the help and vision from his fellow Numana board of directors and serves at the helm as CEO. As pastor of his church for over 20 years, he led numerous mission teams to Africa and Central America for hunger relief. Because of this outreach, he saw firsthand the need of food around the world. Read about his journey to continue feeding the starving below.
The Kansas Hunger Dialogue
Building Community: That’s one of the things we do best. Whether it is a group of 12 people around a table packaging meals or an entire community coming together to host an event, we bring people together.
Remember those “connect-a-dot” games where random dots splattered on a page are slowly drawn together by a line that [...]
The World Really is Flat!
The first paper I wrote in college was about Christopher Columbus who, in 1492, sailed the ocean blue. Many thought it was to prove the world was NOT flat, but it was just good old fashioned greed that caused King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to send him. They were all convinced there was “gold in [...]
Rearranging the Furniture
I recently visited my sister’s house and barely recognized her living room even though I have spent a lot of time there. The paint, the flooring, the lighting, and the furniture were mostly the same, but the major difference was she had rearranged the furniture.
It’s time we rearrange the furniture in our war against global [...]
Rain is a Good Thing
It’s been a long time since we’ve had rain in our area. The thirsty farm ponds of Kansas have been standing with mouths agape waiting for a drink. Those in our area finally got the drink they were looking for in what we call a “gully washer.” Almost 3 inches of rain in sixteen hours [...]
Harlem Globetrotters Slam Dunk Hunger
I’ve never had short-man’s disease. Until now. Look at this photo and you will understand why I felt so inferior – I was surrounded by some Harlem Globetrotters that were over 7 feet tall! With nicknames like Stretch, and Biggie, and Handles, these comedic clinicians of basketball prowess that would soon be giggling little kids [...]
Staff Blog: The World’s Babies are Our Babies – By Brandi Starr
Brandi Starr is our Accountant at Numana. She’s only been on staff a few months, but her heart showed up long before she took the position. You’ll see why she fits so well with us.
My heart has been officially broken. Three weeks ago I looked at HubStarr and told him how unfair it was that [...]
I Need Help!
I need help. I inadvertently cause people to feel guilty when I don’t mean to. When I’m asked what I do for a living and I tell folks that I work for an international hunger relief organization. Here are the typical responses I get as people drop their head in shame:
I just change the channel [...]
The Importance of Numana’s Nutritious Food
The photo displayed shows the difference between the brain stems of 3 year-old children who have been fed nutritious meals and those who have not. And that damage is irrevocable. Josette Sheeran, CEO of World Food Progamme has a very inspiring and challenging TED video about this. Josette Sheeran: Ending Hunger Now
“Food without nutrition is [...]
Having fun while doing good: What Aristotle might say about Numana
I’ve never had so much fun doing so much good!” I have heard that phrase more than once at our events as people package life-saving meals in a festive atmosphere. With the number of people we have showing up at our events, apparently others are of the same sentiment. Packaging meals for starving people is [...]
Heartland Community Church, Olathe, helps us with our 100th event!
Whodathunkit? 100 Numana Packaging Events in two short years!
Saturday, Dec. 17, marked our 100th Numana event thanks to the wonderful people at Heartland Community Church in Olathe! http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150421797801286&set=a.241901656285.149193.167850816285&type=1
We were first approached by Heartland about doing a 100,000 meal event on January 1st, but they felt like that was too close a time frame to raise [...]
